Training camp – Mallorca or Hamburg

March, April and even May are the usual months to go to the training camp. It's at the top of the list for most Mallorca. But is it really necessary to fly to the island for a week or two, or does it make more sense to get fit under home conditions?

Road bike training camp

The Road bike training camp serves to get fit for the season in a compact way within one to two weeks, a kickstart for the season so to speak. Simply to raise the starting level for the coming season within a very short time. Most racing cyclists are drawn to the south. Portugal, Gran Canaria but mainly Mallorca are the classic travel destinations for enthusiasts racing cyclist. The respective regions have already completely adapted to racing bike tourism. Road bike rentals with top bikes and even manufacturer exclusive rental offers are the order of the day. Rose and Canyon, for example, operate large test centers and rental bases on Mallorca. It is clear why most racing cyclists are drawn to the south.

Good weather, great roads and perfect conditions

As a racing cyclist you have almost perfect conditions in the training camp on Mallorca. In the spring there are pleasant temperatures on the island and there are hardly any rainy days during your stay. At around 20°C you can ride short and short and still not lose too much fluid. The variety of routes on Mallorca is simply great. On mostly slippery roads you have the opportunity to explore the island on your own or to hire an experienced guide. Mallorca offers mostly flat roads on 70% of the island. But the really perfect thing is that the island has real mountains on the entire west side up to the north. This is where the motivated racing cyclist can collect real meters of altitude in his training camp on Mallorca. The highest mountain on the island, the Puig Major, is 1445m high. And as if that weren't enough, the island has a maximum east-west extent of 98 km and a north-south extent of 78 km. If you are looking for central accommodation for the training camp - it doesn't always have to be the beach - you can plan your tours in all directions without even having to get on the bus.

Hamburg as a training camp base

Due to our good weather, Hamburg is also suitable this year - yes, I know, it's rather the exception - perfectly as a road bike training camp. The weather for the last four weeks has been just perfect.

For me, the perfect road bike weather starts above 10°C and it should be dry. In 2017 we have had these conditions consistently since mid-March and the thermometer has even climbed to over at times 20°C. We also have excellent training routes in and around Hamburg. Well, we miss the mountains a bit, but we definitely have bumpy route profiles to the south (Harburg and Lüneburg Heath) and also to the north (Holstein Switzerland). The big problem in the home training camp is morale. By that I don't mean getting your own butt off the sofa, but rather taking the time. But if you take the time, that is 1/2 day vacation for example, then you can create effective training weeks and even save money and vacation days.

Conclusion

A training camp definitely makes sense and let's be honest - I don't want to seem bitter - a week or two in Malle is really nice. In addition, of course, I don't want to leave out the fact that a change of location - in addition to the other advantages such as weather and terrain - can provide additional motivation. Familiar surroundings unfortunately always mean familiar worries and routines at the same time. For all those who don't have enough financial means to take care of her Training camp in Mallorca The home training camp is to be relocated good alternative. With enough discipline, you can make the same progress at home as on the island. First of all, I want to say that staying at home is no longer an excuse. It's all a question of planning and I'm just realizing that I'm accusing myself 😉
